Art Basel Paris – Where Money Awaits on the Sidelines

Share:

In a remarkably short time, Art Basel Paris has emerged as the trendiest art fair in Europe, especially during a period when the art market is anything but straightforward. For the first time, this event will take place in the Grand Palais in the French capital.

The art scene is bustling. Just one week after Frieze London, the highly anticipated Art Basel Paris will take place from October 18 to 20. There has been much speculation about whether this burgeoning art fair will soon rival other major events in Europe, particularly Frieze London and Art Basel in Switzerland.

This question arises from a backdrop of ongoing introspection within the art world. Many collectors are currently holding back on new acquisitions, which is also impacting auction houses. Additionally, several galleries are grappling with rising costs, leading to the closure of some prominent establishments in various European cities.

Against this backdrop, Art Basel Paris exudes a unique allure, despite being smaller than its two main competitors in Europe, Frieze London and Art Basel. Nevertheless, the 195 exhibitors at the event are notable, showcasing prominent figures in the art world along the Seine. This year marks the first time the fair is being held at the Grand Palais (Image above), after previously being hosted at the Grand Palais Éphémère for the last two years.

More Profound And Classic

The Grand Palais, built for the 1900 World’s Fair in Paris, along with the adjacent Petit Palais and the nearby Pont Alexandre III, forms a significant architectural ensemble of the Belle Époque.

«Paris» is regarded as different—more classic, profound, and art-focused compared «London» and «Basel». Acquisitions are often driven by passion rather than investment potential. This character attracts artists and could explain the growing significance of Art Basel Paris.

With new sections like «Premise» and concurrent exhibitions in Parisian museums, the «Oh La La!» initiative, supported by 33 galleries, as well as the second edition of the Art Basel shop and collaborations with various luxury brands such as Guerlain, Louis Vuitton, and Miu Miu, the three-day event in the French capital presents itself as highly diverse and dynamic. This approach is particularly appealing to the many Asian visitors who, after attending London last week, are now exploring Paris.

The Organizer’s Credo

«There is still a lot of money on the sidelines,» stated a gallery owner at the opening of Art Basel Paris. This money could quickly circulate once a trend, art movement, or group of artists gains sustainable recognition. The organizers’ vision is noteworthy; they envision attendees returning to Art Basel Paris multiple times over the coming days. This intention also explains the various activities and initiatives undertaken by organizers and exhibitors.

Such considerations were similarly evident in Basel last June when Art Basel debuted in a new format, and Frieze London surprised with its new concept last week, as reported by finews.art.

Navigating Identity Crisis

It is accurate to say that communication and interaction within the art world are currently under scrutiny—triggered by a crisis that has led to an identity-seeking endeavor. Art Basel Paris exemplifies this phenomenon and, with its nearly 200 exhibitors, has progressed significantly, perhaps further than other fairs.
